Mad Organic Woman Makes Her Child Eat Beetroot Cake…
Last year’s snippet in the newsletter about her cake and an idea for a colorant free party cake that is delicious…
From the newsletter from 25th June 2012
“The biggest thing I wanted to chat to you about though was the cake!
Those of you who have been reading me for 3 years now have heard about some of the serious boo-boos I’ve made in my quest to find healthy treats for kid’s parties..my worse being the year I pitched up at the school with carob, gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free, everything free muffins that none of the kids would eat, the ones that tasted quite a lot like cardboard? Remember those? The one where my son accused me of child abuse?
Anyhow, I’’ve gotten better at it since then, by degrees and this year I wanted to find a cake that looked as gorgeous as everybody else’s so that she doesn’t feel like a freak – but that didn’t have artificial colorants or preservatives in.
I wasn’t going to go for a sugar-free cake – I’m over that already, I think my daughter will survive the sugar on special occasions every now and again more than she will the social isolation of having the mum who always brings weird food – J – so I tasked Junipas Cake Studio Bryanston with doing a cake with no artificial colorants and asked them to use beetroot colorant. They did a fantastic job, the cake looked beautiful, the pink color in the icing, looked no different to conventional and they actually ended up using a lot of beetroot in the sponge which replaced a whole load of crap and sunflower oil, I was suitably impressed.
Of course my son still takes issue with me ‘sneaking vegetables into a birthday cake’ and he thought it was a bit ‘too beetrooty’ but most found it delicious, even my husband who isn’t overly keen on beetroot loved it!
So there’s an idea….make a traditional red velvet cake for kid’s parties and you can still get pink icing without paint additives from China. Cool!
Try Junipas cake studio – they do the most incredible cakes, bend over backwards to give you a good experience and will proudly make sure they give you what you want, find them at www.junipas.co.za…
I wish I could say that I made it myself but I just don’t have the time at the moment…..I could stay up late one night and bake I guess but to be honest, I just don’t want to at the moment, I’m happy to hand it over to the professionals especially if they are happy to leave all the chemicals out and they did such a grand job of it….
I’ll actually put a picture up of a slice that shows the beetroot red sponge…it was gorgeous…!”
