My first hello for the week comes with much warmth. I’m literally sitting here willing warmth into the room and hoping to sort of project it towards you.
Heaven knows, warmth today in Jozi can only be an internal concept!
It’s true now that if I want to write to you, I’m going to have let go of any hope that this can happen in the store. Admin, e-mail and writing has to happen at home, the store is becoming the most bustly place I know. Even if I’m sitting in my ‘hoekie’ at the back, I can hear you when you come in and find it difficult to not step out and chat – so my new discipline will be getting admin out of the way at my home office so that when I get to the store I can focus on you and the endless food activity happening there.
I hope all Jozi Real Food activists are doing what you do best – giving warmth, eating consciously, choosing nourishment that serves all, supporting sustainable farmers who serve as custodians of the earth and keeping robust dialogue about food revolution topics going. There is indeed a revolution around food happening in Jozi. Everyday I’m meeting more and more of you desperate to connect differently to food, discovering the joy of great organic food and delighted at the change this brings to the quality of your life. It is so precious for me to suddenly be a part of something so much larger and in dialogue with so many people who care about the same thing. 5 years ago, it was a very lonely and different experience, I had information most people didn’t want to hear. I feel like I’ve stepped out of the closet into a world where suddenly more and more people are speaking the same language. It’s great!
Speaking of which, thank you to everybody who has participated so far in the Jozi Real Food Revolution competition on our Facebook page. For those of you who haven’t seen it – I have put up a video that I would love to see everybody share as a form of our activism for the week. It’s a clip that delivers a very thought provoking expose about why its important to eat consciously and what the real cost of wilful ignorance is.
When I saw it, I realised it has been done in such a way that it might make people who have never thought about factory farming or who decide to wilfully ignore the reality of it, really stand up and take notice. It might ignite a spark in other people to take a stand against the inherent cruelty in the factory farming system. The best people to help with that mission would of course be you – this community of real food activists joyfully participating in creating the change we need in the way food is produced, related to, grown and sold. This is the sort of activism that creates change and we are the custodians of that impetus right now. So the competition on the page is about a post with a clip entitled ‘E-Talks The Secrets of Food Marketing’. To try and get this message spread as far and as wide as possible – I need you to first like our Facebook page  – this keeps you in touch with the Jozi Real Food Revolution issues of the day – share the clip ‘E-Talks The Secrets of Food Marketing’ – watch the clip until the end and write a comment underneath about how you feel about the speakers end message .
If you do all of those 3 things – you will be entered into the draw for a  R1000.00 gift voucher to spend at The Organic Natural and Whole Food Emporium. The winner will be announced on June 30 2014. Please remember that to be entered you must have done all 3 – liked our page – shared the clip – posted a comment underneath about the end. There are some very powerful voices and opinions for creating change – if you read the comments so far you’ll see the strength and energy of some of theJozi Real Food activist voices:) A formidable force.
While we are talking about the revolution and co-creating the change we want to see, there is another gorgeous story this week of another SA food revolution victory illustrating how powerful one voice and one receptive ear can be. One consumer in dialogue with one responsive retailer has a non-GM bread being created in a store for the first time. See the story posted up on our Facebook page, CLICK HERE. It’s a story about how the Spar in Queensland KZN responded to a customers request for non-GM bread. Just gorgeous. This is a tale about the power of 2 food heroes – Neil Snyman who used his voice to ask for change – and the manager at Queensland Spar who responded. Onwards and Upwards with the SA Food Revolution:)
This story made me so happy – it’s happening everywhere – responsive stores in real dialogue with customers about conscious food – the power of this type of collaboration is the future we’re a part of creating. Old school manipulative retailing may still have the volumes and upper hand but they are slowly, bit by bit losing custom to producers and stores offering authentic connection to real nourishment and real change.
We are all a part of a very exciting transformation right now.
Back to food – so in store this week quite a bit has been happening.
We are re-stocked of Keith Harvey’s Grass Fed Beef and have produced our first batch of dry wors for ages – I think it is the best dry wors I have ever tasted. Call me biased indeed but it’s just the cleanest dry wors I know of. We only use Keith Harvey’s mince, fat – Organic coriander, organic pepper and himilayan salt. It’s just great for a protein snack that has all the goodness of beef from animals wholly veldt reared. To order CLICK HERE
and Sam will see you this afternoon if your order is in before 12pm.
Otherwise come see us in store.
We’re fully stocked on Harvey’s grass-fed steaks too – a new batch of boerewors – again no fillers – only coriander, pepper and salt – we’ve done some patties for you too to see whether you want these ongoing. It’s a pack of 4 large 150g patties – no nonsense starch or fillers – again just organic spices, beef mince and fat. Lots of mince too – try The Secret Jozi Chefs recipe for beef burgers using this beef this week-end – they are so delicious, so easy to make and so fulfilling. CLICK HERE FOR THE RECIPE.
On that note if you are looking for a bread roll option to make really good burgers and you find yourself in the Waterfall area – try the Remo’s bakery at the Waterfall Lifestyle Centre – corner Maxwell Drive and Woodmead. They only use Eureka non-GM, stone ground, unbleached flour, salt and water to make their breads – so you can get a good Italian roll to use as the bun that doesn’t have yoga mat additives and other such nonsense banned in other countries – in it! Renzo Scribante one of the restaurant owners is passionate about great food made with great ingredients. They also do a walnut and raisin sourdough there that is seriously worth driving there for.
On another Italian note – Paul Maciel from Pronto – otherwise known as The Secret Jozi Chef put me on to a Sicilian couple who have an artisanal Italian food business in the South making great food. We asked them to make a gnocchi using the organic fair trade Kuhlekudla potatoes, Mandy’s eggs and Eureka stone ground flour. The batch arrived yesterday and is in store and I’m very excited about this. If you’d like to order and have Sam bring you some to try for the week-end with your kids – ORDER NOW. Otherwise see them in the store at Bryanston Shopping Centre in the freezer.
This is a super quick meal idea for busy Mums on the run that don’t want to feed their children rubbish but need a quick fix. The gnocchi packs are in 500g bags – you literally just put some water on to boil in a saucepan with some salt – when its boiling – throw in the gnocchi from frozen- wait for it rise or ‘swim’ as Giovanni puts it – to the surface – at which point it is ready and probably only 4 minutes have passed – put in a bowl with just a blob of Mandy’s butter and perhaps your child’s favourite grated cheese is a meal enough that children are going to love. Otherwise serve it with any great sauce.
Giovanni’s next task is to make you an authentic bolognaise sauce to go with the gnocchi packs made only with Harvey’s Grass Fed beef, organic tomatoes and organic vegetables where possible. Then you’ll have another quick and easy meal for children that you don’t have to feel bad about as it has real nutrition in it and no additives to worry about.
Authentic Italian Gnocchi is in store now – it’s our first ‘Jozi Real Food’ ready made meal using ingredients from Jozi Real Food Revolution sustainable farms. I intend to build up this section so that in time we have a full range of Jozi Real Food meals for kids that you can trust and supportive restaurants that are happy to serve you meals made with ingredients from the best sustainable farms we can find.
I’ll be putting up a bio shortly on the Jozi Real Food site with Giovanni and Angelas details so that you can learn about this great couple from Angelas kitchen doing authentic Italian food well.
A little birdy tells me that shortly you’ll be able to get gnocchi made with these ingredients and find grass-fed mince from Harvey on the Pronto restaurant  menus soon.  I will obviously shout from the rooftops when they’re ready with that and all details about the sustainable meals they will have on their menu will be up on the Jozi Real Food Revolution site.
So try the gnocchi – try the dry wors and mail me some feedback?
Otherwise the store is quite full at the moment – loads of greens – great fare from Aloe Dale – new stock in of certified organic dried fruit – mangoes, raisins, peaches and apricots. There are sourdough loaves – eggs from New Harmony Farm and Mooberry – a selection of delectable soups for Winter from Tracy’s soups, great organic beetroot in from Ambersky, baby leaves from Kazi Farm – a great range of pastured pork charcuterie from Richard Bosman in now including that bacon you are enjoying the best – the dry cured with thyme. Delightful Dimitri from The Gourmet Greek was in early evening yesterday so we’re fully stocked. It was great for those of you in store to meet him – most of you were buying his yoghurt at the time – getting you to meet him and tell him how great his yoghurt is was so rewarding – and gets him to hear straight from your mouth how much you value what he is doing.
Right – let me get back to the shop and end off.
I wish you all a nourishing week-end as always – week-ends should be the time for spiritual, emotional and physical nourishment – go get your fill.
If you want an order home delivered for the week-end – there is still time – CLICK HERE TO ORDER NOW  otherwise we’ll see you in store – upper level – new rooftop entrance – Bryanston Shopping Centre – near Sorbet.
Co-creating a new great food reality with you,
HAVE A BEAUTIFUL WEEK-END.
Onwards and Upwards with The Jozi Real Food Revolution,
Love as always, Debbie
