A Chat About Where We’re At…
I do miss nattering to you. One of my favourite customers commented recently on how the newsletters aren’t as chatty as before and that she misses them. I also miss just having the time to natter in a bit more of a relaxed fashion and I don’t because most of my day is taken up on Mondays with frantically updating the lists and everything is rushed and as we’ve gotten more and more in, there’s less and less time to write to you with proper consideration and I do miss that. So I thought it well worth it today, to just do what I used to do with you and have a proper chat about what’s going on here in my mind and life and behind the scenes of this crazy beautiful nutty vital business…
The Nuts and Bolts…
We need to increase demand in order to stimulate the supply and encourage more organic and sustainable farmers to grow for the market. It’s a delicate and tricky process to get the balance right…which is why traditional retailers don’t bother and put all effort into making sure that their supply chain is assured and jam packed. If that means tons of preservatives to ensure that, they’ll do it. If that means using pesticides and artificial fertilizers to prop up large volumes of conventional produce, they’ll do it, regardless of the harm that causes to the soil and to the surrounding eco-systems. Getting great food out efficiently when nature is in charge and you’re not sitting with a secure supply stuck in cold storage, isn’t for the feint hearted as it’s often a very frustrating exercise.
Yet no matter, how tense a week it’s been from that point of view, as the produce comes in on Thursday and I see the fruits of our labour arrive here and I know it’s from rich and fertile soil and that it’s untainted with pesticides, I get the good-go to get through another week.
When I see how difficult it is out there to get wholly pastured animal meat from animals eating their natural diet and leading a normal animal life, I find the strength to get up and go through it all again for another week.
The Irish Cursed Our Radish and Brocolli…
Sometimes I wonder whether I actually jinx a product by putting up a recipe about it! It’s very Irish – like my father – but it always seems to happen.
Last week – I sent out the radish recipe because radishes were on our list and lo and behold, we didn’t receive them. Then there was the brocolli! Oh my horror – most of you wanted brocolli – there literally was only 1 little plot of organic brocolli in the whole of Gauteng and a restaurant jumped in with their order on Tuesday already and by the time we got our order in Tuesday afternoon, brocolli no more and of course there are no plan b’s for us if a farmer lets us down. There isn’t a list of organic farmers we can consult – there are only a handful and we do what it can. So that was a mini heart-attack on the spot for me and a heated argument with the farmer – but that’s how it goes – I’m so sorry though for those of you that were looking forward to radish and brocolli and got affected by this.
Fresh and Inefficient or Efficient and Not So Fresh…
We are still at this point in time always selling virtual stock so nature or demand can get in the way between when we put it up on the store, order it on Tuesday for you and then receive it on Thursday picked in the morning or the afternoon prior so that it’s fresh f.
The only way to mitigate this, is to buy produce up-front, put it into fridges, and let you order as we have it. The risk there and the reason it’s taking me some time to get to that point is that until there are enough of you out there using this service, I carry the risk of ordering too much. I don’t want to do this until I know that I can get the produce in through-out the week and get it to you within 48 hours. Otherwise we’d be worse off than where we are now where despite the inefficienies of this model, the produce is f resh, fresh, fresh.
We’re getting close to a point though of having a viable solution to this and having enough demand and more assured supply to take those risks.
Change Is Going To Come…
I will need to change some aspects of this business to do this efficiently, part of that change is going to be cutting back on what we have available and focusing rather only on fresh things, the produce that is mission critical and that nobody else is doing – like 100% grass-fed beef, wholly pastured proper free range chicken, dairy from wholly pastured cows, the best fruit, herbs and vegetables we can get from the farms with the richest, cleanest soil…the more I cut out the non-essentials like cleaning materials and dry and convenience goods, the more I can focus on the fresh side and finding you more and more of the great farmers out there, farming humanely, sustainably and ethically.
I can always help link you to local suppliers of the peripheral goods like vinegars and skin care and soaps and chocolate and jams, I think though that if I focus more on the area that I’m most passionate about and where the greatest change needs to be seen – then I need to focus on the nuts and bolts of just plain REAL FOOD. That means – connecting you to REAL FARMS.
We don’t need to make it more complicated than that.
You will start seeing then a smaller range of products up shortly, I’m slowly going to move away from selling things that don’t have too high a demand and just clutter up time that I know you can get elsewhere and more of fresh, ethically farmed fresh produce – the best beef, the best lamb, the best pork, the best dairy, the best sourdough bread, the best organic produce, the best food artisans in Jozi making honest real food.
So it’ll get easier and it will change and I’d love it if you keep chatting to me about what it is that you most want to see.
My Focus for 2013… I am on a drive to get people to understand how critcial it is to get off feedlot meat, how critical it is to understand why the diet of the animal you are eating is critical to your health and that of the animal and the soil that feedsd it. I want to help educate you as to what questions you need to ask and why you need to demand humanely reared, wholly pastured animal products.
There is more education required here, I believe, perhaps than anywhere. I find that there is a massive gaping hole here, people are either vegan and so don’t need to understand what goes on with animal farming, or the masses that aren’t, don’t want to know because they don’t want to become vegan. So it’s feedlot meat or veganism – that’s wrong and this status quo is harmful because it stops us developing the farmer that does pasture his animals and we need those back!
There has to be something in between the vegan stance and eating meat – there is a whole world in between, it’s not a case of be vegan, or close your eyes and ears and eat animal protein. It is mission critical I believe for meat eaters to be looking as deeply into the question of what they are eating and choosing only free-range, grass-fed, pastured and veldt reared animal life.
We need to go deeper and beyond the ‘free range’ logos, and ask more about what that means and choose farmers that feed their animals their natural diet. I only want to represent the most natural, humane and ethical farmers for animals that this country has.
Harassing Restaurants..
Last night we were going out for supper and I was on the phone for a good half an hour beforehand trying to find a restaurant that sells wholly grass-fed beef. I didn’t want beef from a grass-fed, grain finished cow – I didn’t want beef from a grain fed, grass finished cow, I wanted 100% grass fed beef as I don’t believe anymore in the place of grain in a cow’s diet. The lack of availability , education and awareness out there, even amongst some of the best steak restaurants we have, was outstanding.
So for now, I’m the fruitcake annoying restauranteers with my pointed questions about what the animals were fed to the end letter – but I dream of a day when these questions are normal for all of us and where every restauranteer and store owner sees their role as one of being able to accurately answer questions like that. My son thinks I’m totally wierd, yet away from home will not eat feedlot meat i hear – 🙂 – , my husband has learnt to just keep quiet and let me interrogate waiters, store and restaurant owners if he cares for his sanity, and I just can’t keep quiet out there. I will be just as vocal about any restaurant or establishment that is a friend to the cause of real food from real farms.
I was chatting to Keith Harvey last week about the difference in fat content of the beef between cows that were raised solely on grass and those that are on grain, he was telling me about how the fats actually change. In grass fed cows, grass fed beef has far higher levels of omega 3’s – a fat we desperately require in our modern day worlds – grain fed beef has higher amounts of omega 6 fats that we could we with less of. He is going to send me a study that I’ll send to you that shows this to be true. In the meantime, I found an excellent article that covers this topic on the Mercola site…..have a look at this very detailed article entitled –

Why Grassfed Animal Products Are Better For You –
